Philosophy of Literacy
For me, literacy has been a part of my life, which I would contribute to my mother and her persistence in making sure I was able to read. Fluency and Comprehension were two different things in my realm of reading. I considered my ability to read fluently exceptional and basic recall comprehension as well. However, if you are to include deeper comprehension and the ability to relate concepts at a higher level was a struggle for me. Over the years, I am proud to say that comprehension has increased in my skills due to the reading I do.
The ability to comprehend what we read is an essential part of living. Perhaps not deep intellectual, but superficial comprehension is, because it allows for the daily on goings in one's life. From shopping, medication for yourself or your family to basic directions and instructions. Without basic literacy and comprehension, the life of an individual will be destined for hardship and difficulty. Therefore literacy is not just important it is a necessity for a decent future life.

Literacy Focus Through Strategies:

Book Blogs
Reading and writing go hand in hand. Book blogs allow students to write and share what they are reading. This strategy hits both elements of literacy: reading and writing. It also allows each student to see, read and experience what their peers are reading.

Making Connections
By making connections through books, students can increase their comprehension because they diving deeper into the meaning and outcome of a story. Through Novel Studies you can make connections to other types of literature: books, media, poetry, songs and films. There are many ways this can be done. One way which I have used is to connect two different reading level books together by Content.

Partner Read
Partner read allows students who are evenly paired with reading levels to read aloud and listen. Allowing them to work in collaborative groups where each member plays in equal part in the contribution of the work is more productive for a student's academic growth.

Read Alouds
Read alouds provide student with the opportunity to not only practice their listening skills but also to engage in large group discussions. Large group discussion can benefit a student's comprehension in two ways, either they are by themself increasing their comprehension or are listening to their peers reflection in comprehension.

Silent Reading
Silent reading can increase one's ability to self monitor one's action. It is also important because it allows one to choose, reflect and relate to what they choose to read. For these two reasons Silent reading is an efficient strategy to increase literacy.

Literacy Focus through Novel Studies
Novel studies are beneficial for many reasons regarding literacy and for cross-curricular outcomes. This type of large group reading can help with vocabulary, fluency, historical and plot content.
Vocabulary
Comprehension is contributed to by the increase in the level and amount of our vocabulary words we intake from day to day. Novel studies are great ways of increasing the amount and type of words into a vocabulary of a student. One strategy that has effectiveness is skipping over the word and allowing the class to brainstorm possibilities to replace the word. Creating a dictionary or encyclopedia is another way of remembering or cementing the words into their paths. Word walls also help in this respect as well. |
Historical content
Choosing a novel can sometimes be difficult, but choosing a book to relate to a teachable historical or even contemporary moment can allow you to have cross curricular lessons. Integrating Language Art reading into a social, science or math class can be encouraging to a young reader. It can also help get across sensitive issues such as the Holocaust, Native Residential schools, or serious world wide issues, where a novel on fictitious characters are easier to explain then real people. It can also give them an imagination to create the history in their minds making it more real. |
Fluency
Novel studies can help increase fluency as students are given opportunities to read outloud. A strategy for the less confident would be providing take home material that could be practiced at home in preparation for the next day's reading. Allow the students to follow along and hear the words spoken and pronounced will also help. Providing appropriate groups where levels are similar so confidence is increased will also help in increasing a student's Fluency. |
Plot
Choosing a story for the plot can reinforce other elements in your class. While very similar to the Historical Content, it can increase the effectiveness in teaching students how Plots are created and used. By choosing a plot that strongly resembles the Book Mountain of creative writing will help students understand the dynamics of creating their own plot. |
Book Mobiles
