While I may not use the video as much as other teachers, I do believe I would use video conferencing for certain subjects. I think it would be a great thing to talk to other communities, compare data or learn new cultures and languages. Video conferencing makes these world connections possible. It would open the eye to what is out there and not just what is here.
Sure, Videos are a thing of the future, but why? The amount of time you put into rehearsing and filming and editing doesn't leave much time for much else. Yeah I can see the highlights of something new and fresh to teach a subject and even allowing students to embrace the method to do their own projects. However I cannot see myself using it often. What benefit do they present that another method cannot offer?
If I was not afraid of the Internet and Its world, I am now! Holy Cow is things scary on the Web. Privacy is a big issue, not just banking information, emails, social security but my family and address is now easily accessible to the knowledgeable web surfer. It makes me question How great is my security and privacy settings? Are people watching my moves and actions? Am I safe? Cyber bullying is another big issue because it is hidden. Regular bullying is easier to identify and control and deal with, but how do you deal with the bully you cannot see? They can sneak in, change their names, change their accounts and not even know who is responsible for the actions. If the Internet had not made so much of great impact in the world as well, I would argue that we did not need it. I believe the biggest benefit to me, is I will learn how to find my way through the Internet, while understanding some safety issues and be able to find new activities for different curriculum. The different search engines allowed for a different take, and though I felt the Instagrok was interesting, it would not have worked for me. I am a list and see type of person. The different activities I will find will be a benefit to the students by providing them with an interactive way to learning, new strategies for education and fun work. The challenge may be finding the relation to a specific outcome and ensuring the activities are appropriate and used correctly. How will you know the activity you choose is going to challenge the students enough to ensure learning is taking place?
It is amazing how many opportunities the Internet has in order to be interactive. The Smart Board is not so new but the features it has and using it to its full potential is new. In high school our smart board was basically used as a white board. So seeing all these options is fantastic. The options are endless. The only reservation I have about Smart boards is how do we help all students stay active in the class at the same time? The assignment doesn't seem too complicated but having a group of three will usually seclude someone’s opinions. That is a small reservation I have.
It is amazing how much of teaching relies on the presentation. Great speakers use their resources but do not overload their listeners. It is amazing how much work is put into a presentation both in looks and content. I look forward to learning how to become a strong presenter.
