The Road to Afghanistan relates well to our Grade 6 Novel Study: The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. We have been talking about Afghanistan for the last little bit and the difference between the Taliban and the Muslim Religion, we have also Talked briefly about 9/11. Therefore this book in accompaniment with The Breadwinner teach us about sacrifice and standing up for your rights.
I love remembrance day, so this book relates a lot to me and my beliefs on war. I never want us to go to war, but I believe in the quote by Edmond Burke "The only way for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". In some cases such as Afghanistan, I believe the good man had sat too long and is now standing up to the Evil that tainted that beautiful country.
Linda Granfield is the author of many Remembrance Day books. They include In Flanders Fields, Where the Poppies Blow and The Unknown Soldier. She is an advocate of remembering every day, and not specifically setting one day aside to remember. Her illustrator Brian Deines has also contributed to the Remembrance day genre of books by illustrating Our Canadian Flag.
