Summary: Contemporary novels
Our world is continually evolving, therefore our struggles and trials are also changing. Contemporary works give us these perspectives, allowing us to relate our world issues with others through written word. It can become a comfort for individuals who don’t yet have a voice and are struggling silently by themselves. Contemporary works can change determined by the age and what is relevant to the reader.
Theme: FNMI perspective
In the historical sense, Aboriginal culture and Identity has been misconstrued because the authors were very Euro centric, and while many aboriginal advocates wish for there to be a purity of the literary work representing them, there are a few who realize the voice of other can be just as rewarding.
Literary works: Borders, by Thomas King
This literary work deals with whether an Aboriginal's identity of being Blackfoot is more important then claiming a Canadian or American Nationality. Thus, because the protagonist believe her Native Identity is more important than a Euro-centric title. This work would do well as a unit in FNMI content giving students a perspective of the aftermath of colonization and assimilation.
Strategies: I would use an inquiry based unit, where controversial questions could be explored, and allow them the opportunity to express their own feeling of having been assimilated or give them a hypothetical situation.
