For Pip, his life is pretty set for him, live, grow, become and apprentice to his Uncle the Blacksmith and continue life. But great expectations await, as he is adopted by an unknown benefactor and made into a gentleman, all expectation change. Growing in his love for the cold hearted but beautiful young Estelle, he is sure they share the same benefactor and are designed to be together. Expectation takes his path elsewhere, when he learns that his benefactor his the convict from the marsh all hopes for wealth and Estelle vanish. Even in his dark despair, could pip learn that expectations are not always physical but also a state of existence?
Charles Dickens is best known for his works The Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Tale of Two Cities. He is a English writer of the 19th century. He was a social critic of the time therefore his works relate to social issues of the time period. In Great Expectation we are shown the process of the Justice system and how social standings were just important then as they are now. We are also shown how social status affects the future life of different statuses.
I think we could learn a lot from Pip and his experience because we too, have different events happen in our life that we to need to deal with. It isn’t always planned out for, nor can we say that prospects and property are the only way to have great lives, but it is hard work that establishes prestige within a community and the love of dear ones which give us great expectations of life.
