Summary: Historical Novels
I enjoy the use of Historical novels in my personal reading and I look forward to using them in my classroom. No novel is exactly the same, therefore in one historical moment you can have hundreds of different views. As people, we all see life and the events that transpire differently, and we create a different perspective and reaction in our mental capacity. Using Historical novels will open up many avenues of learning, which will make it more interesting.
Theme: Residential school
This theme is one of many dark past in Canadian History. However, as more people begin to write their stories and others as well, we begin to see the trials and outcome assimilation had on Aboriginal Canadians and Americans.
Literary Work: Shi-shi-etko & Shin-chi's Canoe, by Nicola Campbell
These works give an account of how a child's hole life can and was uprooted by strangers and was forced into an existence the child was not accustomed to. It also gives an account of how their resilience helped them through a difficult situation.
Strategies: Again I would use this in a social class when talking about either First Nations, Residential schools or Identity.
