Chapter 7 What Do You Wonder?
Another part of being a good reader is being able to ask self-directed questions. Chris relates the ability a student has to ask good questions will allow them to begin thinking like the test maker. She also makes reference of being an inferential thinker, and questions allow student the opportunity to invest in their learning. Many times teachers focus on the questions that they wish to ask, following the Bloom's Taxonomy as they strive for hierarchy thinking.
A Part of asking questions is to specifically question the text itself which is being read. This will engage the readers during the process, especially during more difficult text where attention is more important. They will begin to assume responsibility for their reading and learning. She gives four ways this may be done:
- By interacting with the text they will establish a purpose for reading.
- By motivating themselves to read because questions create a curious mind, and the answers come from sources or inferent thinking.
- By clarifying information in the text because questions can help diagnose confusion.
- By inferring beyond the literal meaning they allow the questions to increase the comprehension in a subject.
