Scott Speer is a Native born Californian. He most likely wrote this book for the pure enjoyment, however I have learned that there is more to this world then following an ideal. We need to stand for the ideals we cherish and not simply follow the world.
This book connects to me because in my own life now the world seems to be changing in a direction I do not agree with. This change goes against every good and honest value I have within. As Maddy Montgomery witnesses her world turn upside down with no ability to stop it, I too feel this way, that I am powerless to control my surroundings.
Through out this book I was continually reminded of the quote from the movie Australia, "just because it is doesn't mean it should be." This book continually reminds me of the fact the world has had norms that existed that never made sense and honestly should not have been put in place. This is the position the book takes in it's own unique way.
